Dog undergoes alcohol addiction treatment

A dog in Plymouth, south west England, has been treated for alcoholism after being taken to a rescue following the death of its owner.

The dog, a two-year-old Labrador named Coco, developed an addiction to alcohol due to his owner’s habit of leaving drinks out before bed, according to Newsweek.

Coco and her canine friend were both taken to the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust. According to the Trust, Coco and her boyfriend quickly fell ill.

“Coco’s friend adapted several times and soon after Coco started adapting as well.” wrote the Trust on Facebook.

Despite the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust and the best efforts of the emergency vet, Coco’s friend died. Meanwhile, Coco continued to be in serious trouble.

After round-the-clock care and observation, the Trust said it became clear to them that Coco was suffering from alcohol withdrawal symptoms. “Canine alcohol withdrawal, a first for yous,” the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust wrote.

Fortunately, after being sedated for four weeks to help with withdrawal, Coco is now “out of danger” and is off all medications.

The shelter said it was grateful Coco was now “start behaving like a normal dog.” However, despite having recovered physically, Coco is still very anxious at times. And that makes Coco unprepared for adoption.

To help with Coco’s mental recovery, he is being treated by the Trust’s Dunroamin Special Care Unit in a more welcoming environment away from the main kennels.

And the Trust said the arrangement made a difference to Coco’s recovery and general well-being.

Coco has been at Woodside Animal Welfare Trust for over a month now. And no one knows how he and his boyfriend became addicted to alcohol or what their life was like with their landlord.

“But we know that without our care, Coco probably would not have survived this heartbreaking ordeal.” said the Trust.
